Capturing the Sweetness: Tips for a Perfect Newborn Photography Session

Newborn sessions hold such a special place in my heart. They’re such a lovely opportunity to capture all the sweetness of the first few weeks of your baby’s life. The tiny toes, sweet little fists and angel eyelashes are all important details that seem to disappear quickly in their first year. There are a few things I always like to share with my clients in order to prepare for these sessions and ideally I share these tips before delivery.

First, in order to achieve the light and airy look for their newborn session I suggest we use spaces in their home that have lots of natural window light. This can be the nursery, master bedroom or even living room. If we’re using the bedroom it’s ideal to have light colored bedding to help reflect light or at the least have a white fitted sheet.

Next I ask them to be prepared to let me know when to arrive at their home based on the baby’s feeding schedule. I find it works best to have these sessions right after a morning feeding for a few reasons, the light is typically best and the baby is VERY content and sleepy after eating and more inclined to fall asleep for natural posing. I recommend choosing lighter colored clothing to wear for Mom and Dad and share that I’ll be bringing along a few swaddles but they can absolutely have some outfits picked out for their newborn.

These tips make a huge difference in the overall experience and resulting images for my clients newborn sessions. It also doesn’t hurt to include the fur baby or fur babies!!
